Which Bollywood superstar do you associate these features with?

Bulging biceps, six-pack abs, rock like torso?

Hrithik? Obviously.

Salman? Of course.

ShahRukh? Possibly. Remember Om Shanti Om?

Aamir Khan? No way. He is the ultimate chocolate Hero, but not a brawny guy.

Well, Aamir Khan wants to prove us wrong. In his latest movie, Ghajini, he comes with all these physical features and more. If Shah Rukh can have “six pack”, why not Aamir? He also sports a bald head. The new promos of Ghajini have been released and the movie is generating some keen interest. The music direction is by A.R. Rahman and one of the songs has also been released.  Click here to watch the youtube version of it.

Ghajini is a remake of the blockbuster Tamil movie with the same name, which in turn is derived from the cult movie   ”Memento”. I use the word “derived” because the story lines of Ghajini and Memento are based on the concept of “short term memory loss” and many of the scenes in the Tamil Ghajini were facsimile copies of some scenes in Memento. The basic story is also similar (revenge) but Ghajini has a different screenplay that includes songs and other masala in it.

One of the songs is beautifully choreographed and is among my favorite songs. Click here for its youtube version. I’m sure you will like it, even if you do not know the language. Another nice, but wierd number can be found here too.

Coming back to Memento, I came to know of this movie when I was reading a review of the Tamil Ghajini a couple of years ago. The plot of Memento was so unusual that it prompted me to search for the DVD of this movie. I went to the extent of becoming a Netflix member just to get hold of this movie and I finally got it. Watching “Memento” was a thrilling experience and I pretty soon understood why this movie is a cult movie. You’ll need to watch the movie a couple of times to realize the brilliance of the narrative. I don’t want to give away any more of the movie and spoil the fun of watching it but here are some teasers:

  • This movie is the ultimate example of non-linear story telling.
  • The beginning of the movie is actually the end of the story.
  • The end of the movie is actually the middle of the story.
  • The movie is split into several segments each of roughly 5 minute duration.
  • The first 5 minute segment is the end of the story and the second 5 minute segment is the beginning of the story. The odd numbered segments trace the story backwards and the even numbered segments trace the story forward in an alternating fashion. These two sequences meet at the end of the movie which means that the end of the movie is the middle of the story.
  • There is one another thing which you will realize only at the end of the movie. I’ll keep it as suspense.

Feeling confused or unable to imagine such a movie? That is the USP of this movie. This is going to challenge your brain like no other movie.  Get a DVD and watch it immediately.

As far as the Tamil Ghajini is concerned, the concept remains the same but the narrative is linear and not very complicated.  Some parts of the original Ghajini were very ridiculous but it was accepted by the audience. Aamir Khan is likely to improve the screenplay and make it more watchable. After all, he has to safeguard his reputation as a quality movie maker.  All in all, I am excited about the movie and am eagerly waiting for the release of the movie.

I came across Memento while searching through IMDB titles, it is featured in ‘top 250 titles’, when I started watching it, Gajini’s story flashed through my memory but soon realized it is a totally different story with a similar theme, but crafted brilliantly..the innovative script wasn’t a surprise for me as I have this habit of looking into wikipedia before I go see a movie(footnote-if you really want to enjoy the film, have a look at this link only after watching the movie..)…

I couldn’t resist discussing some of the logical disconnections(may be they are my wrong conclusions..) I encountered while watching this movie..really sorry if it is going to be a spoiler, but as I have pointed out earlier, the wikipedia is always there to spoil a film’s story…

    1) The ending is somewhat confusing as it throws a lot of questions to the audience and leaves it to their imagination..the story of insurance claimant is one element, I don’t understand its relevance in this story, finally Ted says there is no such thing and it is Guy who murdered his wife,by giving an overdose of insulin..

    2) At one point it makes me think that he takes a snap shot of Ted’s car’s licence plate because he realized he is a lier and he was using him to get the drug dealer whacked..! If his intention was to kill Ted, why shouldn’t he do it right away? Instead, he is recording his licence plate thinking that his trail would eventually end up with Ted..that was a bitter pill to swallow! If it is not exactly like what I think, please enlighten me..!

3)Finally it’s up to the audience to reach a conclusion that he might have been killing people for quite a long time, but then Ted’s credibility is questionable.
