What is your “blog personality” type?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Many of us working in the corporate world have taken the Myers-Briggs psychometric test at least once. For those who are not familiar with Myers-Briggs (M-B), it is a test designed to understand a person’s psychological preferences and the M-B assessment classifies a person into one among the 16 different personality types. These 16 types are based on the 4 preferences mentioned below. According the M-B’s official website, the preferences are

Question 1. Extraversion(E) or Introversion(I)

2. Sensing(S) or Intuition(N)

3. Thinking(T) or Feeling(F)

4. Judging(J) or Perceiving(P)

A personality type is a combination of the 4 preferences above. For example, one person’s personality type could be ENTJ and another could be ISFP. The details about these 16 types can be found here. You may find out your own personality type by visiting this link

M-B test has been quite popular in the corporate circles and is used in identifying an employee’s personality type and assigning tasks accordingly. Now, a website called Typealyzer has come up with a new tool that determines the M-B personality type of a blogger. Unlike the real test where one is required to answer a series of questions, determining the blog personality type is quite easy. Submit the link of a person’s blog website to Typealyzer and voila! – you get the blogger’s personality type.

I personally found this website very interesting. After finding out my own “blog” personality type, I ventured into finding the “blog” personality types of IndiaSpecial’s most popular authors like Kandamangalam, Mukund, Nars and others in the list. I was surprised by the pattern I found. I don’t want to spoil the fun by revealing what I found. So, find out for yourselfJ.

It would be interesting to understand the implications of this new tool, Typealyzer. Will bloggers start writing differently? What do you think?

Note: This article is based on a blog post by Rachel King that appeared in the Technology section of BusinessWeek magazine on March 22.

Being Dissatisfied-Happily

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

The article, “Where the head is held high” drew two interesting comments. One despaired of anything changing for the better in India, while the other radiated hope. It was a repeat of the oft quoted “the glass-is-half-full vs the-glass-is- half-empty” debate between the optimists and pessimists.

Happy Indian More than a year back, I witnessed in a forum what to me was an effusive, unbridled and blind glorification of India and Indians. To counter what was only one part of the story, I went to the mike and spoke about the hundreds of suicides by farmers all over India, particularly in Vidharbha region. Then my teacher, T T Rangarajan, the Founder of Alma Mater spoke while I squirmed in my seat.

Rajan said if anyone felt strongly about the plight of the poor farmers, do something about it rather than just speak about it. And, by being positive, proactive and truly concerned about people, we can stop suicides from happening.

Finally, our minds are like the radio. Whatever frequency we tune into, we attract into our lives.

If we tune into a channel of happiness and abundance, our reality would mirror that frequency. The much acclaimed recent book, “The Secret”, by Rhonda Byrne covers the same ground that Rangarajan has been espousing for several years.

In the Swaminomics column of 25th January, 2009 in The Times of India, the well known economist, Swaminathan S Anklesaria Aiyar, makes a very bizarre but interesting contention.

“UP is on the verge of economic take-off. I base this prediction on the fact that Uttar Pradesh has reached the Ranji Trophy cricket finals in three of the last four years, winning the trophy in 2005-6. And, believe it or not, there is some association between cricketing and economic clout”.

Perhaps, there is a connection between feeling good and becoming good economically.

I am hopeless at economics and so I can be permitted to ask a few naïve questions about the current world economic mess. Despite several fundamental reasons for the present crisis, what can explain the sudden feeling of scarcity though the wealth available in the world about a year back was pretty much the same as it exists now? Is the disappearance of wealth a conjured perception or a reality? What is the meaning of “market sentiment”, a favorite term of market analysts? Could it be that the present economic paralysis is largely fed by the collective vibrations of fear emanating from people around the world? Perhaps the answer, like what Hamlet says to Horatio is, “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

Tijn Touber, in a great article – based heavily on quantum theory – titled, “The amazing promises of the Zero Point Field” asserts,

“Dreamers used to be laughed at by people who considered themselves sensible. Now those dreamers have science on their side. Dreams are where reality begins. The future is created by seeing that future, by tuning into it. In principle, anything is possible. The miracle of Jesus and other enlightened thinkers was their ability to see and help shape a better world. They understood: if I want another world, I have to learn to think differently. Or, as Gandhi put it: ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Speaking about things closer home, India Special is another dream that has been unleashed into the universe and yearning for nurture and tenderness at this stage of infancy. Sudev and his team have a dream and I see them tuning into a great future, consistently. There is a collective responsibility that each of us share. It is to breathe life into this dream by putting ourselves to some slight “inconvenience”, by taking responsibilities – encouraging good initiatives or contributing good articles, commenting or even by the simple gesture of rating an article. We will then see the unfolding of Paulo Coelho’s prophesy, “ When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it…”

I started with the debate raging around us and within us between forces of pessimism and optimism. My teacher, Rajan’s answer would be to stoke the fires of dissatisfaction within us, and doing something about what makes us dissatisfied, while remaining happy all the time. In short, “being dissatisfied, happily.”

Let Us Celebrate “The Good Citizen’s” Day

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Today India celebrates its 60th Republic Day. As it is the case with all the Republic Day there will be republic day parades, there will be civilian honors, honors in memory of the service rendered by the selfless Indians – some of whom laid down their lives last year for the benefit of the living. Examples include Karkare, Amle, PC Sharma, Unnikrishnan, Salaskar, Kamte and the likes. These heroes will be given Ashok Chakra

128225160_8536ea8cf3Then there are those who by their sheer excellence in achievement in their own field, have been selected to receive the prestigious awards like the Padmashri, Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan. Examples include Aishwarya Rai, MS Dhoni, Shekhar Gupta, CK Prahlad et al. The complete list is here.

They are distinguished achievers – no doubt about it and they should be rewarded for their commitment for the contributions to the society.

The other highlights of the Republic Day include a parade by the different regiments of the Army, the Navy and the Airforce in their finery and official decorations followed by vibrant displays and floats and a flypast by the Indian Air Force.

All these are mesmerizing to watch at and adds to the color and glamour that India is famous for.

In the middle of all these lets not forget the vision of Gandhiji, the wisdom of Babasaheb Ambedkar, the leadership of Nehru, the commitment of Dr. Rajendra Prasad and all those who committed to getting us the freedom that we are enjoying today.

  • Let us remember, that the collective vision and resilience of a billion Indians can fight corruption, terrorism, crime etc if we do the right things from time to time, every time and give back to the society which has given us all.
  • Let us fight corruption by not being a party to it in any manner.
  • Let us fight crime by plucking out the root cause of all – poverty, greed and lust – let us vow to make difference to those who live around us, in the positive way.
  • Let us be good citizens of India by being agile, alert and well informed – let us not be a victim of ignorance and absent-mindedness.
  • Let us fight for the right reasons- let us not worry about the nitty-gritties of life, lets look at the larger picture and move on.

So what if we don’t get a Padmashri, or a Padma Bhushan or any of the Chakras. How does these matter as long as we know that we have done the right thing and all that matters our answer to ourselves and nothing more.

Let us try, on this day and every day from now on, be a Good Citizen. Lets celebrate “The Good Citizen’s” Day.

Happy Republic Day !

AR Rahman Wins Golden Globe Award

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

AR Rahman, creates history by becoming the first Indian to win of Golden Globe Award. He won this award for excellent background score he composed for theARR latest movie, Slumdog Millionaire, yesterday, 11th Jan 2008.

The underog called Slumdog Millionaire, sweeped all awards in categories it was nominated for. It won four awards including Best Film, Best Directory, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score.

ARR who is revered as Mozart of Madras has made his presence felt worldwide with this. While his other international works got him a lot of acclaim, this definitely makes him known to folks he was unknown so far.

It was a great day for Indians at Golden Globe as it was not only AR Rahman who was present at the ceremony. Sharukh Khan was the one to present the award to Slumdog Millionaire and was another first of Indian film representation at the awards ceremony.

Slumdog Millionaire is already a favorite for Oscars and may be we are in for more surprises too.

For now… AR Rahman rocks!

Slumdog Millionaire Movie Review

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

I will give credit to Danny Boyle (Director) for handling the movie nicely especially some of the sensitive topics. Slumdog MillionaireI will not bore you all repeating about the story, which revolves around this 18-year-old guy from slums cruising towards winning the multi-millionaire game to find his love of life.

The story starts mocking Jamal (the slum guy) on the show referring him as a “chai wala” (a tea supplier) playing who wants to be a millionaire game. He slowly gains confidence of the audience and whole nation when he starts answering all the questions relating them with events happened past in his life. You must watch the movie to see how he relates each answer to the past events. Although its sheer luck factor for Jamal to get questions in the game for answers he can relate. Otherwise a guy who does not know the image of Gandhi on a 1000-rupee note can answer a question about image on 100-dollar denomination. Anil Kapoor as usual acted very well in the movie as the show compeer. Jamal could answer all questions in the game based on past events but the last one. So go watch it how he answers the last question and finds his lady love.

Some excellent performances from all actors make this movie look real and touching. Every kid who acted in the movie leaves a lasting impression. “Feel Good movie of decade”, is how this movie is being promoted and it doesn’t seem exaggerating once you watch it.

Conclusion: Nice movie. Good direction, excellent background score by AR Rahman. But there are couple of disturbing scenes shown in the movie on poverty. Not that they aren’t true, but I guess all these days we have struggled lot to improve our India’s image from “Poor” to advanced state of developing nation. I am yet to see a movie by a foreign director on a new concept other than poverty in India.

Go watch this one!

Ghajini Music Review – Rahman Does It Again

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Ghajini

Produced by: Geetha Arts
Directed by: AR Murugadoss
Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi
Music: AR Rahman
Audio on: T-Series
Starring: Aamir Khan, Asin, Ziah Khan

Aamir Khan should be appreciated for trying to break away from routine films. This time it is Ghajini, a remake of a Tamil hit starring a south Super Star Surya and Asin. Aamir successfully managed to keep up with Surya’s looks in the Tamil Version. Here’s a glimpse for you:

Ghajini
Images Courtesy: Wikipedia and The Hindu

Lets now jump straight to our topic, music.

This is the fifth score from AR Rahman this year and this time he teams up with Prasoon Joshi. Music for the Tamil version was by Harris Jayraj and was a big hit. I personally have couple of favorite tracks in the Tamil Version and I was eagerly looking forward to Rahman’s take on this movie. Gladly, I am not disappointed. On a track to track comparison, Behka Behka is the only track where Harris version is better. Rahman trumps the rest. Read take of few others on these two versions here.

I have mentioned in my earlier review of Yuvvraaj that usually Rahman’s music grows on you. Same is the case with Ghajini. However for a change these are a few tracks in this album which are instantly likeable.

Let’s get straight to the tracks.

Tu Meri Adhoori:
The album opens with this track and guess what it is likeable right from the first note. The track progresses very smoothly and again Javed Ali does a good job. Sonu Nigam lends his vocals and does that very well. Made me wonder why Rahman had to put to use two great voices for this track. Hey but again he has his way of making songs sound wonderful. Scores (10/10)

Aye Bacchu:
Stylish song Suzanne sang the song with exhilarting spirit. Very western and peppy. Short song, but impressive.
Scores (9/10)

Kaise Mujhe:
Soulful track in the album. Benny Dayal and Shreya Ghosal are superb. The haunting rhythm of the song doesn’t leave you once you listen to this. Lyrics are strictly ok, Prasoon Joshi seems to be running out of his stock. The music and excellent vocals make up for them. Scores (9/10)

Behka Behka:
I personally felt this song is the weakest perhaps because I love the song for this situation in the Tamil Version. But I saw the song in the TV the other day and it felt much better with accompanying visuals. Rahman has used Saxophone again after the Jazz number from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, but it doesn’t sound as well as it did in the latter. Overall this song sounds just about ok. Karthik, I felt is unimpressive on this track.
Scores (7/10)

Latto:
My favourite track in the album. Shreya Ghosal is outstanding in this track. Shreya sings this with lots of energy. I had an impression that Sunidhi is best for such songs, but Shreya is just too good in this song. The music and instrumentation is superb and is no less to any R&B tracks say of Rihanna or anyone else. Score (10/10)

Kaise Mujhe – Instrumental
Instrumental version of Kaise Mujhe.

Needless to say Ghajini is yet another success for Rahman this year after Jodha Akbar, Yuvvraaj, Jaane Tu ya Jaane Na and Ada.

Overall Score: 9/10

This year was a great year for all music lovers with five albums from AR Rahman. Now that we have all the releases for the year for Rahman. I wanted to provide a overall rating for his releases this year.

Top 1: Jodha Akbar 10/10
Top 2: Yuvvraaj 9.5/10
Top 3: Ghajini 9/10
Top 4: Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na 9/10
Top 5: Ada 7/10

If it weren’t Rahman’s releases, there aren’t any albums this year to write home about. Wish there could be so releases every year from Rahman!

Kerala CM Lambasts a Martyr’s Family. How Fair Is It ?

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

I read this article on CNN IBN yesterday and I was shocked to say the least.

Dog’s got more pride than wanting to be in your lines, Mr. Achuthanandan !

Honestly, how else can you react at these politicians ? What the hell is wrong with the Kerala CM Mr.Achutanandan ?

Mr. CM, the family was better off without your condolence visit, if that was what it really was. How could he have said

“If not for Sandeep Unnikrishnan even a dog wouldn’t have seen that way (their house in Bangalore) ?”

Sometimes you wonder where these regardless people come from and leave alone their sorry existence we elect them into government. What a shame!! And he doesn’t even feel sorry for what he said. So much for communism and communist party ways! His leader at least had the decency to regret the comments made.

Someone gave his life for our well being. A brave soldier, worship his parents if you can. For he was who he was because of them.

What audacity to insult them?

A grieving father might have felt ignored and I’m not surprised that he did with the way you behaved, Mr. Achuthanandan.

Let me remind you Sandeep Unnikrishnan and his family are role models to the entire nation, but you Mr. CM are a disgrace we wouldn’t want to own.

The same MNS chief who once called Hemant Karkare a traitor of Marathas has no words today. Why don’t they ever think before they open their lean mean mouths? The sacrifices made by these great men will never go in vain. But when leaders for their own selfish needs try and demean the sacrifices made, we as citizens with a social conscience must let them know where to draw the line.

So to all those leaders who think mouth lashing is an indulging hobby, let’s see you walk on the roads without your top class security, without those bullet proof cars and without a fear in your eyes when you see a stranger approach. I’m sure I’m asking for too much of these men and women.

At least stop lashing out like mmm sorry which living being can we compare this act to ???

None I guess, exclusive to immoral politicians you see

My Vision for India- Bridge the “India-Bharat” divide

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

The term “India-Bharat” has been quite popular over the past few years. After BJP launched the “India Shining” campaign in the 2004 general election and lost it, many political pundits attributed the loss to the unequal distribution of prosperity between “India” and “Bharat”. They contended that only “India” benefited from the economic reforms whereas the “Bharat” was left behind. While anti-incumbency was the major factor of loss, there is some truth in the unequal growth of “India” and  “Bharat”.

So what is the difference between the two words?

Both “India” and “Bharat” are notional entities that signify the relatively better-off urban areas and the poor and backward rural parts of the country respectively. The term was apparently coined in 1978 by Mr. Sharad Joshi but gained prominence in 2003.

“India” has better physical and communication connectivity and better living standards. The urban economy is based on strong services or manufacturing sectors. On the other hand, “Bharat” has poor infrastructure and living standards and it has an agrarian economy. 70% of the country’s total population lives in the rural areas. The implication of this number is huge.

The country cannot aspire to become a super-power when vast majorities of its people do not gain from the increasing prosperity. So, reducing the “prosperity” divide between the urban and rural India should remain a top priority for the future governments.

India can learn a few positive things from how China is tackling this inequality problem. China is investing heavily on projects that will transform large parts of its rural areas to urban centers. By doing this, China hopes to prevent massive migration from villages to cities that put enormous strain on the existing urban infrastructure and reduce the opportunities in the villages.

So, here are some solutions that could reduce the divide.

Renewable energy

Significant resources should be allocated for setting up of renewable energy infrastructure in the villages. Most villages of the country receive abundant sunlight (about 6 months a year) and sources for bio-energy are also significant. Tapping these energy sources can be accomplished by providing subsidies for installing solar panels and bio-energy harnessers that power lights, computers and other electronic devices. Tax breaks for the solar panel manufacturing firms will ensure lower cost for these technologies..

Agriculture

Investment in agriculture is very essential to increase the productivity of arable land. Subsidies can be provided to projects that improve the irrigation systems and also farms that employ effective water conservation techniques. Improvement of roads and access to technology will enable farmers to reach the market faster and get better price for their produce. Investment should also made into food supply chain, like cold-storage (mobile and stationary) facilities to prevent rottage of food which in turn puts more money into the farmer’s pocket.

Knowledge

One of India’s strengths is the emphasis on knowledge. We should make sure that everyone in the village has access to knowledge by investing heavily on primary education. More schools should be opened, more teachers be recruited, higher salaries for teachers be provided to motivate more qualified people to join the profession and a big push be given to computer literacy in the schools. This factor is an absolute must for the long-term sustainability of the India’s growth.

Connectivity

Improvements to the physical (road, rail, air) and digital(telephone, broadband) infrastructure should be carried out at an urgent pace. Once sufficient connectivity is achieved, knowledge and technology firms should be encouraged to move farther from the cities and closer to the rural areas. This will generate employment in the villages, reduce migration to cities, enable professionals to work closer to home and ensures fairly equal distribution of wealth.

While I acknowledge that the government is not oblivious to this “India-Bharat” divide and is sincerely doing quite a lot of work in bridging this divide in the form of plans like Bharat Nirman and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, more ambitious targets should be set and the progress strictly monitored.

Many of the problems like terrorism and Naxalism can be eradicated by lifting people out of poverty. By giving more growth opportunities to more and more people, social harmony and national unity can be strengthened. The political leadership should unite and summon all the will it can, to succeed against these challenges. The task is difficult but very much doable.

Mumbai is Burning–Where are you, Raj Thackeray ?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

Last 55 hours India has faced its worst ever crisis. 15-20 terrorists took Mumbai under siege. As many as 150 people killed including several High Profile Cops, Army Jawans, The Taj burning, gunfires, grenades, AK 47s, and god knows what not.

Mumbai is burning. India is angry. Pakistan seems to have a hand.

One man who had spoken for the Marathi Manoos and lampooned North & South Indians left, right and center seems to have hidden behind the curtains. No one heard his voice. He seems to have chickened out.

It needed the strong brave army of National Security Guards consisting of mainly North & South Indians to save his Marathi Manoos.

Raj Thackeray – Today, your head should bow in shame. So much for your regional jingoism !

What have you done for the Marathi Manoos ? Attended them at the hospital with a few hundred cameramen around you so that the whole world could see your drama, your crocodile tears ?

Where were you  when there was fierce gun battle in front of The Oberoi, The Taj and The Nariman House ?

Your party is called Maharashtra NavNirman Sena. And I thought Sena means Army – No ? The name “Sena” is a shame for you and your partyworkers.

What NavNirman are you talking about ? NavNirman means Rebuilding. We don’t want people like you to rebuild once it is fallen. We want people like Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte, Vijay Kalaskar who would lay down their lives and not let the morale of the Marathi Manoos fall.

We want leaders with a vision. Not one who would pitch against each other for every petty thing.

Go learn something from the Army, from the Jawans, from the guards who laid down their lives for Mumbai. They didn’t talk of South India or North India. They talked as if they belonged to one nation – India – Their India.

Raj, it is high time that you gave up your utopian concept of a Marathi boundary filled with Marathi Manoos. We are Indians first.

For heaven’s sake – Stop Your Regional Jingoism !

Can A House Divided Against Itself, Stand?

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Kandamangalam’s article, Modi-fying Gujarat – Is Narendra Modi leading by example?” was interesting as it explored matters of leadership as well as development. One of the comments to the article was the question,

Do you want an India which is highly secular (which I doubt will ever be the case) or a progressive India?.

Today, (November 26, 2008) Gujarat’s Chief Minister was in the news, campaigning in Delhi for his party. NDTV reporter said BJP’s poster boy, Modi was at his acerbic best and pilloried the government for the prejudiced handling of the Malegaon blast case.

Confronted with the reality of Modi’s road to progress and his style of politics, I want to re-phrase the above question and ask,

“Is it really possible for India or any country to make progress without secularism?”

We have examples of countless leaders whose world view was narrow, confined to the boundaries of a race or a religion. Hitler idealized and romanticized about the pure Aryan blood of the German race. He saw the rest of the world as disposable commodity and exterminated about 8 million people. True, while he was around, he also brought about progress in ample measure.

About one millions Hindus and Muslims lost their lives during the mad communal frenzy during Partition days immediately after our Independence.

Idi Amin in Uganda expelled about 75000 Indians and Pakistanis in 1972 - determined to make Uganda “a black man’s country”. During his barbaric rule, he exterminated about 300000 people.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984. And Delhi witnessed the blood of Sikhs spattered on the roads of the city. Babri Majid was demolished in 1992 and then all mayhem was let loose and one thousand people were butchered because they belonged to the “wrong” community. Godhra happened in 2002 and the rest is history. In August this year, it was the turn of the tribal Christians in Khandammal in Orissa to flee their homes for the safety of the forests.

I search from history for instances of countries progressing amidst sectarian strife. I draw a blank. In fact I learn that sectarian strife was always accompanied by decay in the economic fabric of countries. Have any of you readers, come up against exceptions?

Right now, there is news of terrorists in Mumbai striking yet again, blowing out many innocent lives. We should deal with them firmly and make an example of them so that we will be rid of this menace. But I maintain that they are only puppets on a string, while those who pull the strings occupy the central stage of our national arena. They are the progressive leaders who have prepared the soil and seed for these mindless, violent crimes against humanity to germinate. Who will bell those real cats, is the question.

If we permit communal hatred or talk of “the others” to dominate, it will lead to the hunter soon enough becoming the hunted. The Bible says, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”  What is economic prosperity and progress, without security to life itself? Winning battles but losing the significant war will make all of us losers.

Gandhi was totally and unequivocally opposed to the concept of “the end justifying the means” A lofty goal has to be achieved only through lofty means and actions.

My Vision for India-Care for the Withering Flowers

Tags: , , , , , , ,

They are forgetful but not mad. They are wrinkled but not withered. They are old but not meek but above all they are humans and not a burden.

Only a few days ago, headlines on the front page of a national daily screamed: ‘Family throws granny on garbage heap’.

The accompanying photograph was of the semi-paralyzed 75-year-old woman, left to die on a rubbish heap by her grandsons. The boys had acted under the instructions of their mother – the old lady’s daughter – who had decided that she could no longer take care of her mother.

In September last year, a 37-year-old man beat his father. A son out of sheer desperation raped his old mom.

With an increasing number of cases of abuse and neglect towards senior citizens being reported across the country, Indians can no longer boast of being proponents of traditional family values. Four out of 10 elders are victims of abuse.

Unfortunately, the gradual disintegration of the joint family system and the growing number of working couples has meant that the elderly are left to fend for themselves. Many are left struggling through the last years of their lives, alone and neglected.

About 4.6 percent of older people are victims of physical, sexual or financial abuse, perpetrated mostly by family members and those who are in a duty of care relationship with the victim. Elder abuse, the mistreatment and torture of older people, through a manifestation of the timeless phenomenon of inter-personal violence is prevalent in India.

Still, there is no systematic collection of statistics or prevalence studies, crime records, journalistic reports, social welfare records and small scale studies to provide evidence on existence of abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of elders.

This is an extremely sorry state of affairs. We all will grow old sooner or later. Imagine being mistreated, verbally abused, denied proper food, proper medication and care by younger members of family.

Older people are indeed in a very helpless situation with eroding social values system in India. We all must have come across at least one or two cases of elder abuse or mistreatment in our neighborhood.

In the masculine centric society that we are heading to, the acts of work, wealth creation, enjoyment, hedonism, hyperactivity define the culture. Gone are the feminine centric roles of nurture, care, healing, consideration and empathy. If women get into masculine roles of acting as protector and provider, then some men must come down to the roles of nurturer and healer. A society which drives itself at breakneck speed without out occasional maintenance can have severe wear and tears.

With nuclear family further getting reduced to single parent family, Most old people have to head towards the Old Age Homes. In a morally corrupt country like India, there is no guarantee that they will not experience severe abuse in Old Age homes as well. Unfortunately, media is glamorizing this old age home concept.

There are also cases of severe elder abuse where the children force the old and sick elders to give them their savings or write property in their name. Sometimes children even file legal suits on the elderly parents making the frail and sick elders to run around the corridors in courts.

But, the most disturbing phenomenon is the legal abuse of elders by daughter-in-law. Imagine, a police jeep coming in front of the house, arresting the family members as old as ninety years and taking them to prison just because an adulterous daughter-in-law filed a false complaint of harassment against the entire family. Next day, media flashes the news of how an innocent daughter-in-law is harassed by a family of sadists with enough colors in it. In India, police arrests old and sick elders “Without Investigation” if a daughter-in-law or grand-daughter-in-law complains of harassment.

I speak of India because the Indian culture today is fast diminishing it is getting more and more so called modernized. In our culture old is certainly considered as gold it is also considered as a bank of knowledge and experience. But it is now very disheartening to say that today old people are merely a forgotten treasure instead they are considered more of a burden. Who is to be blamed for this our fast paced life or our forgotten values?

It is an extremely unfortunately scenario in India where old people are told to campaign if they are wronged. The old people having passed their prime, being weak and sick can not shout slogans in the streets. They can not hold protest marches. Often, when they approach Human Rights activists or Feminists oriented NGOs, they are shown the door. Even media remains totally silent about elder abuse in households except occasionally reporting murder of lonely elders in urban India.

Many such elders have committed suicide after spending some ten to fifteen days in jail. In some of the cases you will see that in most of the incidents the old people’s children as well as their grand children are involved in causing atrocities to them. It is rightly said that what comes around goes around .Today whatever values that you inculcate in your children, they will mould into that character only. May be in future your children will be the one throwing you out of their house.

So what is the solution for this?

The hands that fed you, the eyes that cried for you when you were hurt, the people who gave you ultimate care and protection in your childhood need your help today. It is said a man when he grows old should be treated like a child.

Your child, your parents, your grand parents – all need your help.

Take those wrinkled hands in yours today and say “I am with you…..I do care”

Let us care for those withering flowers and make India a shining example – That is my vision for India !

Let’s make India a better place to live

“Yet again the communal clashes in the city has left the streets  burning with the flames of hatred killing thousands of people all over “.

This is Naina Sahay reporting live from Mumbai, Kal Tak.

Naina was a young, flamboyant journalist who had earned herself a lot of accolades for her brave reporting and blunt comments that supported the truth. Her parents passed away when she was barely the age of 12 in an accident leaving behind a lot of responsibilities and a younger brother to take care of.

As she grew up she started working at a very young age in order to give her brother the best of life she could. She gave him love of a mother, father as well as sister. And in the process earned a living through whatever jobs she could lay her hands on. Naina got introduced to the field of journalism through a friend and since then there was no looking back.

Naina just kept on climbing the success ladder to earn herself a life she truly deserved. From scratch, today she owns a good house, car and everything. But what Naina truly cared for was Armaan, her younger brother. She could never live without him. A slight fever and the girl who could report under waist deep water during Mumbai floods would go paranoid.

A small wound on Armaan would make her go berserk  and a drop of tear from Armaan’s eyes would just make Naina depressed. Probably that’s the reason why Naina was unmarried because she could not live without her brother and would want to give him her undivided attention.

But then one incident shattered her life.

In the year 1993 communal riots broke out in Mumbai .People were behind each other’s lives. Dead bodies were lying on the roads. Injured unattended and bloody and gory sight’s everywhere. People were scared to get out of their houses yet Naina risked her life to deliver news to people.  So many times the bullets must have just missed her but even through such tensed situation she would remain calm and help the injured on the streets. While doing her duty her finger constantly clicked Armaan’s number at the interval of every half an hour to ensure his safety.

Suddenly one day Naina heard a cry of help. On drawing closer to the sound she realized there was a man badly injured and was probably taking his last breadth. The man in a hushed voice called Naina closer. Naina hesitantly went closer. The man revealed a sensational news that would rock the nation and he also had photo evidence to back his story. Naina was shocked at the evidence. Before Naina could ask him any questions the man closed his eyes forever.

The man said that the current Chief Minister was involved in the clashes of Hindu and Muslim communities and he had started communal rights in order to degrade his political rivalry. Naina had a very important evidence and also the power to stop the future bombings that were planned to kill the leader of the opposition party which would leave the entire city burning and spoil the situation even more.

Naina hurried to her house and kept the photograph with Armaan. She went to her Head Office to make arrangement for her breaking news. But what Naina wasn’t aware of was the man who followed her to her house.

While Naina was in the office preparing for the prime event the man entered her house. Armaan heard the noise and went in the front room. The man attacked Armaan, Armaan resisted and tried to fight back but the man just removed a gun and shot down six bullets into Armaan. Armaan’s knees gave away, he fell down and instantly his life was snatched by the cruelty of the world. The man ransacked the entire house and found the photograph and ran away with it.

Naina with her boss returned to her house. Her feet trembled, beads of sweat trickled down her forehead, she collapsed the darkness was’nt only for the moment but for the rest of her life.  Seeing the pool of blood which Armaan was in, disturbed the mental state of Naina.

The news was’nt deliverd but the death of Armaan resulted in the suicide of the courageous self of what Naina used to be. Yet again the politics of our country silenced the truth. She lost her mental balance, she lost her voice and what was left was a silent suicide which was never recorded..

Statistics have shown thousands of people suicide due to different reasons but have we ever thought of the loss of individuality that people suffer at the hands of our ignorance…It is high time we follow the philosophy of LIVE AND LET LIVE… It is high time we understand that we are not divided on the basis of religion, caste, creed or sex but we all belong to a much higher sect that is Humanity.

We all have 2 eyes 2 hands 1 nose 2 feet, so why the heck are we fighting for our so called differences. Let’s all join in this human chain of understanding and love so that we make India, a better place to live in.
