It is like saying I have stolen something, but now I have thrown it as I have a free replacement, therefore am not guilty. Secondly, like it or not Linux is geek stuff, trying fedora, redhat, etc, most of the people wouldn't even know what they are and why are they so many? Also both of them are linux distros not Unix. Finally, it disappoints me to see this article as "Featured article", which says using pirated software is ok as long as you switch to "legally free" versions as soon as you can. I would have thought editors to excercise some discretion before letting this article get onto their website.
